Old Dairy Brewery Range of Finest Ales

Currently pouring out of our brewing kettles are two fine ales, the first is our flagship beer, the superb Red Top Best Bitter, a fine traditional English bitter. The second is our lighter ale Gold Top – Golden Ale which is very much like lager but better. Both are superb brews, easy on the palate, no added bananas, lavender, cinnamon shavings, just great Hops, Malt, Yeast and clear filtered water – we hope you enjoy them!

RED TOP – BEST BITTER

“Rich tan, balanced bitter, with a light citrus twist”

Red Top is a traditional English Ale but with a more relaxed taste. It is brewed using our unique combination of Maris Otter, Crystal and Brown Malt, with Challenger, East Kent Golding and Cascade hops.

The result in a rich tan coloured beer, that is balanced on the palate, with a hint of citrus aroma. It shows all the characteristics of best English bitter.

By combining Maris Otter, the best British ale malt, with malts normally used in the finest continental lagers gives a beer with good body, caramelised undertones and a distinct gold colour.

This fine recipe gives a beer that will appeal to ale drinkers and lager drinkers alike.

BLUE TOP – PALE ALE

“a dangerously drinkable pale ale – nice and hoppy with hints of lemon.””

Blue Top maintains the heritage of the famous India Pale Ales which were originally brewed in the
18th century to satisfy demand for English beer in India. In order to survive the voyage unspoilt the beer was always strong and well hopped.

A Brewer's Life

…so Ed, you think you can brew!

How did I get the job
Through an ad in the trade press I got in touch with Mick the founding brewer who was soon to return to Australia to his family. Luckily for me the day arranged for me to come down to the brewery to be interviewed was also the day that the first trial brew was taking place.

I joined in with the brewing and ended up spending six hours there, which certainly makes it the longest and the most interesting job interview I’ve ever had and I even got to drink some of the beer we made!
I must have made a good impression as it wasn’t long before I was offered the job and I had no hesitation in accepting.

I was able to overlap with Mick for a week before he left so I could check the details of how the equipment worked and since then I’ve been in charge. There’s plenty of work to do but as far as jobs go being in charge of a brewery takes some beating.
